Minimally invasive surgery: laparoscopy, Thoracoscopy and Arthroscopy
To minimise postoperative pain and recovery time, many surgical procedures can now be performed using a minimally invasive approach whenever appropriate.
Minimally invasive surgery (MIS), including laparoscopy, thoracoscopy and arthroscopy involves gaining access to a cavity through small incisions, creating a workspace, and manoeuvring extracorporeally activated instruments within that workspace to perform diagnostic and surgical procedures.
Benefits for patients include:
- Better visualisation for the surgeon due to magnification and light
- Decrease in postoperative pain
- Faster postoperative recovery
- Significant decrease in postoperative complications
- Cosmetic effect with smaller incisions
Common indications for MIS include:
Laparoscopy
- Diagnostic uses
- - Liver biopsy
- - Pancreatic biopsy
- - Lymph node biopsy
- - Splenic biopsy
- - Intestinal biopsy (laparoscopic-assisted)
- - Abdominal exploration
- Surgical uses
- - Ovariectomy
- - Gastropexy (laparoscopic-assisted)
- - Cryptorchid surgery
- - Cystotomy (laparoscopic-assisted)
- - Peritoneal dialysis catheters placement
Thoracoscopy
- Diagnostic uses
- - Thoracic exploration
- - Lymph node biopsy
- - Thoracic mass biopsy
- - Pleural/pericardial biopsy
- - Lung lobe biopsy
- Surgical uses
- - Pericardial window / sub-total pericadiectomy
- - Thoracic debridement for pyothorax (mediastinectomy, pericadiectomy,…)
- - Lung lobe lobectomy
- - Thoracoscopic-assisted chest tube placement
Arthroscopy
- Diagnostic and surgical uses for
- - Elbow: elbow dysplasia, incomplete ossification of the humeral condyle
- - Shoulder: OCD, medial instability, biceps tenosynovitis
- - Stifle: cranial cruciate ligament rupture, meniscal exploration, menisectomy
